County Description - 1843

*Wayne County, Georgia is situated in the south east part of the state, and contains 900 square miles. Altamaha River bounds it on the north east. It is drained by Santilla River, Little Santilla River, and Turtle Creek. The surface is low, and in some places marshy.
Capital: Wayne Court House. [Present day county seat is Jesup]
There were in 1840, neat cattle 7,854, sheep 404, swine 3,933; Indian corn 16,281 bushels produced, potatoes 15,125, cotton 19,183 pounds, sugar 3,465; 3 stores, with a capital of $11,500; 1 grist mill.
1 academy with 12 students.
Population: whites 877, slaves 367, free colored 14; total, 1,253.
